Blood Clots and Menstruation...

I have a question concerning menstruation. My periods have been really heavy as I've gotten older. Today I had two really huge blood clots fall out. I probably should know this at my age, but can anyone tell me why we get blood clots? Why would they be significantly bigger at times? Do you think it's just a cleansing thing?

blood clots form when blood pools in the uterus for awhile before it comes out. i would imagine that the more heavily you bleed, the longer it takes for the blood to come out and just sits in there longer? i know that after giving birth, when you stand up after stting for awhile you can pass clots for this reason, the blood is just sitting in there and pooling and it coagulates and clots as blood does.

maybe an acupuncturist would say something different, but that's the physiological explanation as far as i know.
